Walker’s Landscape is proud to be one of the newest members of the
Texas Adopt-a-Highway program. We recently adopted a 2 mile stretch along Highway
281.
The Adopt-a-Highway program gives groups the opportunity to help their
communities by collecting litter and beautifying roadsides. This
international program originated in Texas, where it remains one of the
Lone Star State's most successful public-private initiatives.
Did you know?
-
Each year 140 million cigarette butts will be tossed out on Texas
highways.
-
Depending on the surrounding environment, it can take a cigarette butt
up to 20 years to decompose because of the plastic in the filter.
-
Litter can harm animals. They can get caught in plastic six-pack rings
or choke on virtually anything not properly contained in a trash
receptacle, such as gum or cigarette butts.
-
Roadside litter in Texas has decreased by 52 percent since 1995.
-
It can take a beer bottle one thousand years to biodegrade. When we
visit museums today, we see beautiful tools and artifacts. Our
descendants will hear, "if you step to your left, you'll see a discarded
six-pack found outside Longview."
-
Thirty-seven percent of Texans believe convicts pick up most of the
state's roadside litter. However, hired crews pick up 90 percent of
litter, which means your tax dollars are paying for it.
-
It costs approximately $37 million to clean up roadside litter in Texas
each year. Ninety percent of this cost is paid for with tax dollars.
-
Depending on the surrounding environment, it can take a cigarette butt
up to 20 years to decompose because of the plastic in the filter.
-
Roadside litter in Texas has decreased by 52 percent since 1995.
-
One in three Texans admits to littering. Look to your left. Now look to
your right. Does someone in the room have a trashy secret?
